Students Love Technology

Technology has its place in the classroom, but it's amazing how addicted some students are. Some of the stats below are downright alarming. I do use technology to communicate with my students as well as post assignments, solutions, worksheets, etc; I even use it for testing. However, I draw the line at texting in class. And if a laptop is open, they better be using mathematica or MathLab.

  1. Chris, those are interesting statistics. When I was at MUN, one of the common complaints I heard from lecturers was that in a lot of classes, where more than half the class attended, all the lecturer would see was the top of the students' heads since they were either immersed in their computers or smart phones. The argument is made that learning styles are vastly different than they used to be, and that this "method" of learning, focused on technology, is acceptable. My perspective is that if someone is going to go to the trouble of preparing a lecture and delivering it, the least I can do is pay obvious attention and engage the lecturer in some dialogue.

  2. Amen to that VP. One of the most irritating things I experience while lecturing is to see, as you stated, the top of a student's head. They are not paying attention, while is there prerogative (so stay the hell home), but it interferes with those around them - students who are really trying to learn. That’s the most annoying part. And the material I teach - math - does not easily lend itself to using laptops or smart phones in the classroom. When I see a student texting, I give them a warning. If it persists, I ask them to leave, sometimes unceremoniously - something I thought I would never have to do at the post-secondary level.
