I will be updating my platform on a daily basis. These will include issues such as development, the town's need for a pool, traffic, infrastructure needs, financial accountability and so on. Please continue to check back .
Development
“Paradise is the fastest growing town in Atlantic Canada.” This is a phrase we have heard for a long time. While this may sound good on paper, growth comes with a litany of problems - traffic congestion being the most blatant. Countless times over the past 8 years or so, pristine land in Paradise has been rezoned. Whether it is from rural to medium residential density (MRD) or to high residential density (HRD), rezoning is a common practice.
While I’m not against development, I do feel that a proactive approach is required. Developers should abide by our rules. Clear-cutting should be prohibited (consider what is happening around Neil’s Pond). Developers should also be required to ensure all lots are serviced and all infrastructure such as sidewalks are in place before being awarded any tender. Residents should not be forced to pay for sidewalks after developers have left.
The new council has to take a serious look at the proposed development near Octagon Pond. While the plans do call for a park and green space, 2600 new homes is an excessive amount. We cannot afford another repeat of what is occurring around Neil’s Pond.
Pool
The town desperately needs a pool. Besides the obvious health benefits a pool can provide, we could finally have swimming lessons in our town – not in CBS, Mt. Pearl, or St. John’s. How many of us had to line up at the Aquarena , Mt. Pearl, or CBS pools to try to get swimming lessons for our children, only be given the worst possible times? It’s been happening for years (decades, actually). The pool should not be a regional facility. It has to be ours. Paradise residents should get first chance to book swimming lessons and not have to line up in another town.
