Most of us are familiar with the Baby Boomer generation and Generation X. Baby boomers are those born between 1945 and 1964, while Gen Xers were born between 1965 and 1980. Those born from 1981 onwards are called the Millennial generation and are also referred to as Generation Y, Generation Next, Echo Boomers or simply as Millennials. According to trusty Wikipedia:
Characteristics of the generation vary by region, depending on social and economic conditions. However, it is generally marked by an increased use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies. In most parts of the world its upbringing was marked by minor decrease in the Socialist approach to the politics and economics.
More on the demographics of the millennials can be seen here.
To that end, the Pew Research Centre has devised a short quiz to determine how milliennial you are. The science behind it appears solid and my score accurately reflected my generation.
Some of the 14 questions may have you scratching your head – “Do you have a piercing in a place other than your earlobe, or not? “ for example, but quiz results are interpreted scientifically and there is an in-depth analysis of the findings. And no, 85-year old great-grand mothers who have tattos and tweet do not skew the results.
