Last Friday was Conan O’Brien’s last night as host of “The Tonight Show”. After only seven months, he was shown the door by NBC executives who decided to reinstate Jay Leno as host.
I have always liked Coco - a name I found out on Friday’s show that was coined by guest Tom Hanks. Neil Young was also a guest and sang Long May You Run, which seems appropriate.
O’Brien isn’t going away empty handed. His severance is in the area of 45 million dollars minus 12 million for his crew. Nice work if you can’t get it. Last week, David Letterman, who has taken great delight in the backlash against Leno, said that when he left NBC, all he got was a restraining order.
In his finale, O’Brien took the high road and thanked NBC for the opportunity to host "The Tonight Show" – calling it the dream job for any comic. He also thanked the network for the chance to work late night for almost twenty years, something he clearly loves to do.
Of course, there are some stipulations to his leaving. He can’t do late night TV until September (probably on Fox), he can’t make fun of NBC and he can’t use characters that are property of NBC such as Triumph the Insult Dog and the Masturbating Bear.
