Twitter Turns 5

Happy 5th Birthday, Twitter! The wildly popular microblogging service has come a long way since co-founder Jack Dorsey first tweeted, “just setting up my twttr,” back on March 21, 2006.

How far? It took more than 38 months to reach 1 billion tweets. Now, Twitter’s 190 million users create 1 billion of the 140 character-or-less posts in a week. The huge volume of “what I had for breakfast” updates and banal observations from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears make Twitter an easy target.

But Twitter has also been a communications hub for anti-government uprisings in Iran and Egypt. And by some accounts, the company now has a market value of nearly $10 billion. Oh, and it recently welcomed the “winning” Charlie Sheen to its user ranks.
