Back To The Grind

Like a lot of folks, today was my first day back to work after the holidays. Bummer. It’s always difficult getting back into the swing of things, especially getting up early again. It was tough going this morning I tell ya, but I managed. It normally takes us two or three months days to get back into our routine. And just about everyone I know has a morning ritual - especially those with kids.

Speaking of sleep, I see that the Mother Corp has commissioned a survey on the sleeping habits of Canadians. Seems that most of us don’t get enough shuteye. It’s cause for alarm as it has detrimental side effects such as diabetes, obesity, heart problems, etc; just what I needed, something else to worry about to keep me awake at night.

Elsewhere….

The Purity Factory struck is finally over. It was hard times for hard tack for a while but it appears the four-month strike is over. Good news for those missing their jam- jams and raspberry syrup.

Speaking of strikes, Metrobusted. The Metrobus strike continues to drag on but union officials have said they want to get back to the table on Wednesday. Maybe they finally realized they have little public support and that changing their demands mid-strike doesn’t look good to the average Joe who was to hoof it. A lot of people, especially students and those with disabilities, have been inconvenienced to say the least. I wouldn’t be surprised if Metrobus service is scaled back once the strike ends. Ridership is declining and it’s hard for the City of St. John’s to justify a huge subsidy in face of recently announced tax increases.

Singer Gerry Rafferty died today from problems stemming from alcoholism. He’s best known for his eighties hit Baker Street, which is a standard on classic radio stations today and still holds its own. He had sunk into relative obscurity after the hit. He was 63.

VOCM was reporting that someone was crying foul over the nomination process for provincial Tory leader. The story has been pulled (vintage VOCM), but the unidentified person (I wonder if they’ll figure out it was me) claims the process is fixed and does not allow anyone outside caucus to file the necessary papers. The Liberals are now claiming that the whole process was a set up and the plan was to give Kathy Dunderdale the job all along. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why anyone would want the job, let alone any job in politics. I couldn’t stand to listen to people like me.
