Thirty Years Ago Today

It’s hard to believe it has been thirty years since John Lennon was fatally shot. It’s one of those I-remember-where-I-was moments. I was at my parent’s old house in the west end of St. John’s, still in high school. It was a Monday night and I can recall Howard Cosell, of all people, crassly announce that Lennon had died. Up to that point, I knew he had been shot, but didn’t know his condition.

I recall being more shocked than anything else. He was 40 years old, which at the time seemed old. On October 9th he would have turned 70, which now, ironically, doesn't seem old. I wonder what his view of the world would be today and what impact he would have had over the past thirty years
